Former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell Takes on Anti-Science Republicans on Bill Maher

Former Conservative PM Kim Campbell was Canada’s first female prime minister, her last political role in a career that included many other firsts, such as being our nation’s first female Minister of Defense.  Recently on Real Time with Bill Maher, she demonstrated the quick wit and candor that made her successful.  She also showed that being a conservative doesn’t necessarily mean being anti-science and a denier of both climate change and evolution.  In the clip below, Campbell is having none of Republican Jack Kingston’s nonsense about the climate science not being settled:

“…Climate change is a huge threat to our security and to deny it is to have your head in the sand.”

To watch more of the episode, where Campbell goes on to challenge Kingston’s anti-evolution stance (“I don’t believe I came from monkeys”), go to rawstory.com.

  1. Campbell may have been our first female defence minister, but I’m pretty sure the post existed before she came along. Also, her main success came was in holding the bag for Brian Mulroney when Canadians finally got a chance to vent their disgust with him and reduced the largest majority in Canadian parliamentary history to a two-seat rump. I’m glad she did it, but I’m not sure it would be counted a success.

  2. Correction noted – thanks!
Yes, Ms. Campbell did get left holding the bag, and the Conservatives were decimated after that election. However, she had a successful political career before that disaster, and seems to have done alright for herself after.

  3. Bill Maher needs to get his head out of the sand re oil companies and global warming.
They fund more warmers that sceptics. Kim Campbell is also no authority on climate change. She read a bit about one person’s report on jet streams over the north and thinks she has the answer. There is no consensus as she tried to say. That is an over used comment as well as “the debate is over”. The debate is only starting.

    • Gerald – your credentials to address the science of climate change are…..?

As for “funding warmers” (curious turn of phrase), Gerald, the oil companies ARE the warmers. Our addiction to burning fossil fuels, and transferring carbon from the ground into the atmosphere, is what is causing our climate to become destabilized.

On this blog, as in scientific circles, the science discussion is not about whether or not our climate is changing because of the carbon pollution, and other GW gases we are putting into the atmosphere, but what we are going to do about it. If you are high on the credibility scale (see my comment policy page) and have something to say about the science, you are welcome to comment on it. When you assert the debate is starting, you make those oil companies (and the Koch brothers) very pleased, but your children and grandchildren might disagree.
