PMO Issues Alert: “Foreign Radicals Threaten Further Delays”

Kady O’Malley, who blogs on politics over at the CBC, has posted the memo sent out last night by Prime Minister Harper’s office. When I first read it, I thought it was political satire à la Rick Mercer or the gang over at This Hour Has 22 Minutes. But the sad truth is, this is what is now considered reality, and newsworthy, over at the PMO’s office. Welcome to Wonderland folks, where up is down, environmentalists are radicals, and those raping and pillaging the earth for short-term economic gain claim the moral high ground:

Foreign radicals threaten further delays

Today, Ecojustice attacked the independence of the Northern Gateway Joint Review Panel.  ForestEthics, Living Oceans Society and Raincoast Conservation Foundation joined them in their attack on the Joint Review Panel.  Here are the facts:

The Northern Gateway is currently going through a careful and comprehensive review process to ensure the proposal is safe and environmentally sound.

Radical groups are trying to clog and hijack the process, rather than letting the panel do its job independently, expeditiously, and efficiently.

Our government has asked that the review process be conducted efficiently and without excessive delays.  We believe reviews for major projects can be accomplished in a quicker and more streamlined fashion.

We do not want projects that are safe, generate thousands of new jobs and open up new export markets to die in the approval phase due to unnecessary delays.

Our Government’s top priority remains the economy and creating jobs.

Canada is on the edge of a historic choice – to diversify our energy markets away from our traditional trading partner in the United States or to continue with the status quo.

We know that increasing trade will help ensure the financial security of Canadians and their families.

We want to take advantage of the booming Asia-Pacific economies that have shown great interest in our oil, gas, metals and minerals.

The Regina Mom has responded to this extremism in admirable fashion, doing her own research on those “foreign radicals” threatening to delay the oh-so-important Northern Gateway Pipeline. To get the full scoop, head over to PMO Hates Gays & Greens, Judges & Nurses, AKA “Foreign Radicals”.

Let’s give Rick Mercer the last word (again, a sign of the times that Canadian comedians are speaking more sense than our federal government):

  1. thank’s for all the informative news and reports- your page is one i visit almost everyday.. but Rick Mercer?.. he is a bit of a self serving attention seeker, to do any common good don’t you think?.. just ask anyone who knows him… here in NFLD, that would be everyone!, (it’s a small place).. too bad, with his popularity, he could make a difference, but no one actually takes him seriously and why would they?.. so nix Rick, for more credibility..please..
    thanks

    • Hi Guy –
Thanks for the East Coast perspective. You folks may not take him seriously, but when he starts making more sense than our PM, we should probably be concerned!

  2. So many Canadians are asleep that we absolutely need a Court Jester to wake us up. Rick Mercer is a brilliant satirist and social commenter. Happy to see that you featured him Christine.

My own “blacklisting” by the Harper Govt (as proven by 220 pages of ATIP docs) is further evidence of Harper’s efforts to clamp down on those who disagree with him. My 20-city European art show on climate change was cancelled due to behind the scenes government interference — the show organizer was intimidated and bullied into cancelling the show. See my latest post which includes an email from the Canadian Ambassador from the Baltic States, Scott Heatherington. He wrote that my essay on the tar sands (Fat Cat Canada’s Giant Litter Box) was the reason he was not comfortable supporting my show, and why other Canadian Embassies should not support it either. http://www.frankejames.com/debate/?p=9598

    • You’re like a dog with a bone, Franke – the Conservatives will be sorry they ever messed with you. Thanks for standing up for the right to freedom of expression in this country.

    • Yet we have to listen to Rex Murphy’s constant Conservative rants on the National. A good thing CBC still has Rick Mercer – but for how long?

  3. How strange to hear the PM use the word “sustainability” – too bad it refers to a finite resource (oil) that he cannot wait to sell off, and more recently to the Old Age Pension! RicK Mercer is right – our right to debate has been taken from us. Both should have been subject to debate in the last election. Pat

  4. Harper seems adroit at co-opting terms and making them his own. If he gets away with declaring his government’s path is sustainable, we’re really in big trouble. Who’s going to say “The emperor has no clothes”?

  5. C’mon “Dad”, play fair!

I think the PMO is feeding the fire and it will backfire. The more this is in the news and people hear about it, the more people are going to see how ridiculous he is for being so one sided.

    • I totally agree, Sherry. They are showing their true colours. Will Canada wake up and see what’s happening to our democracy and our children’s future? I sure hope so!

  6. Ah, the privilege of majority government. Or is it minority majority government. In any case, in Canada majority equates to 39% of 61%. Imagine what might have happened if the other 40% had voted. If we do not get electoral reform soon, Ottawa will surely be incapable of preserving our National Igloo.
